Assistant Chief Engineer
Location: Devonport, Plymouth
Salary: £55,000 – £60,000
About the Role
We’re looking for an Assistant Chief Engineer to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We’re a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. Engineering Services (ES) provides engineering management and technical support services to enable the delivery of the company’s key contracted outputs to the MoD – essentially to deliver available and capable ships and submarines to the Royal Navy.
Maritime Mission Systems Group within ES contains both Strategic and Combat Systems Engineers who provide engineering support services to the MoD, in addition to providing organic engineering support to the wider Babcock business across multiple sites. As Assistant Chief Engineer you’ll directly contribute to Naval Operations and the provision of safe, available and capable submarines.
Using your significant knowledge and experience gained as a Systems Engineer you’ll play a leading role in internal assurance for engineering activity in the field of Submarine Combat System Engineering, which include conducting internal and external reviews of complex submarine combat system issues. You’ll act as an internal SME on Submarine Combat Systems, providing advice and facilitating coherent information exchange; you’ll represent Babcock Submarine Combat System Engineering activity in key Enterprise Groups, working collaboratively with industry partners; ensure we have the required Submarine Combat Systems Engineering capability to deliver the customers’ outputs. You’ll also mentor and develop less experienced staff, as well as conduct engineering peer reviews.
What do I need to do the role?
You’ll hold a degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent and have relevant technical and management experience. You’ll also be qualified to Chartered Engineer, or in the process of gaining Chartered status.
We would also like you to have the following:
A deep knowledge of Submarine Combat Systems and equipment
Experience in both reviewing and authoring complex engineering reports
Good written presentational, analytical and IT skills
Experience of providing technical oversight to teams
Experience of working with, or as part of, MoD / Royal Navy authorities with sound knowledge of their organisational structure, working practices and policies.
Lastly, you’ll be a strong communicator with the ability to effectively interface with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, developing and maintaining effective working relationships.
What else do I need to know?
The successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.
What impact does COVID-19 have on the recruitment process?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to ensure that our recruitment processes are regularly reviewed and adapted, as required, to ensure we’re compliant with the latest government advice. We are striving to protect both our current and future employees by acting in a responsible way which reflects the restrictions we may face.
Babcock will be continuing with essential recruitment activity but implementing relevant recommendations to ensure that this is done in a responsible way with consideration of the unprecedented circumstances we are facing.
If you applied to a role which is not categorised as ‘essential’ or which cannot be performed by remote working, the recruitment process is likely to be affected. This may mean that your application may be delayed.
Interviews will be held by phone, WhatsApp video, FaceTime (where available) or you may be asked to complete an online interview.
