Surrey County Council
Be the difference
We are building a new approach,
To put children and young people at the heart of everything we do.
A message from Dave Hill, Executive Director – Children, schools and family
“Every morning, I get out of bed and come to work because I want to make a difference to children. We want to make a difference to children’s lives. We want them to be living in their own families, wherever possible. We want people who are going to have relationships with those families, and with those children. This is the place, in this country at the moment, where you could make the biggest difference. So I’d be delighted if you come and join us because I want passionate people working for us. This is the place for you.”
About the Role
Children are at the heart of everything we do and over the last year we have been building a new approach to help support the children of Surrey.
We are looking for Social Workers, Senior Social Workers and Advanced Social Workers to join our team of dedicated professionals across our Safeguarding teams in Surrey to help embed Surrey’s new family centred approach to tackling the causes of children being in need or at risk.
Why we do this
It is not possible to provide great services without a fundamentally close connection with our children and families and that is why Surrey implement the Family Safeguarding model. This model is a strength based and includes professionals who work with adults in teams supporting children and their families. We are bringing together Social Workers, Family Support Workers, Domestic Abuse Practitioners, Recovery Workers, Mental Health Practitioners and Psychologists so that the whole team can address all the issues facing a family.
This ground-breaking approach has proved highly successful in other authorities around the country and Surrey is the first council in the South East to implement it for the benefit of Surrey’s children. As an early adopter of the model, Surrey is ahead of the curve in this approach.
The family safeguarding model allows for caseloads to be reduced across the board so that professionals can spend more time working with families. Having professionals from different disciplines working under one roof, our teams are able to work closely together, minimising the time spent on making referrals to other agencies for support.
Surrey County Council has a fantastic opportunity for qualified social workers to join one of our Safeguarding teams. We are looking for committed and passionate workers who are interested in the challenges of working in a busy, professional environment.
We believe that Surrey is one place in the country where professionals can make the biggest difference to children lives. We have taken huge strides towards delivering outstanding children services, and we want professionals who are passionate as we are to join us on this journey.
Both Social Worker and Senior Social Workers have a bespoke Learning programme developed by the Surrey Children’s Service Academy. You will have Continuous Professional Development and are supported to become Practice Educators with a clear Professional Development Pathway.
Advanced Social Workers, is an exciting newly developed role in Surrey Children Services. While holding a significantly lower case load of complex cases, you will be supporting the Team Manager to develop social workers who have less experience in the field. This is an opportunity for you to progress your career in social work while not entering into a management role.
The Council has also invested in training staff in the Family Safeguarding model, Motivational Interviewing, as well as investing in support to develop systems thinking in practice in Surrey. Your development will be supported by regular supervision and appraisal as well as a range of coaching, e-learning and other reflection and learning opportunities.
We offer £34,688 – £38, 476 per annum for Social Workers and £39,438 – £43,744 per annum Senior Social Workers and Advance Social Worker; salary dependent on level of experience. You would be based at one of our 4 Office locations in Guildford (South West), Woking (North West) Redhill (South East) & Walton-on-Thames (North East).
The Social Worker Start Up Package of up to £2,000 (paid pro rata for part time employees) for new employees joining Surrey County Council as a Social Worker in the Children, Schools and Families Directorate on a permanent basis.
