Surrey County Council
At Surrey Fire and Rescue Service we are putting prevention at the heart of our Service and we are looking for talented people who are ready for the challenge of engaging with our community, helping people to keep themselves safe and ensuring that the most vulnerable are supported where we can.
Do you have the ability to quickly establish positive relationships with diverse groups of children, young people, their families and partner agencies?
Can you deliver high quality, informal education interventions, on a 1:1 basis, to children and young people?
Would you like to use these skills in a fire service setting?
Firewise is a targeted educational intervention. We work with children and young people who have been referred to our service because they have been setting fires. Referrals come from various partner agencies e.g. Schools, Police, CAMHS as well as from parents and carers directly.
As the Firewise Scheme Officer your work will include delivering fire safety education to children and young people who have been setting fires. You will be involved in receiving and processing referrals and keeping accurate records of work you have undertaken. You will also support other advisors in arranging, delivering and recording Firewise sessions. You will help to drive Firewise forward with the support of the Firewise Scheme Manager.
You must have experience of working with children and young people and be able to show us how this work has helped create more positive outcomes for them. You will need to be able to engage with families/carers and partner agencies in managing risk and effecting positive change.
You should also be able to evidence good written and verbal skills and have an ability to use information technology effectively, including databases, spreadsheets and Microsoft Office 365.
We will provide specialist training in the area of juvenile firesetting to ensure you can use the skills you already have in working with children and young people to help them stop setting fires and to help them to be safe with fire in the future.
You will report to the Firewise Scheme Manager and be part of the Children and Young People Team that will include a team of Education Officers who will also help to deliver Firewise sessions as Firewise Advisors.
Nominally based at Surrey Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters in Reigate, this position will require you to work in a variety of locations including private homes, fire stations and schools.
If you think you could be the person we are looking for, we would love to hear from you. Previous unsuccessful applicants need not apply.
