We’re looking for a candidate to fill this position in an exciting company.
Being responsible for the firm’s risk management and assurance framework and the global management of legal, professional and regulatory risks, to inspire, promote and continually improve the risk culture within the firm and secure the firm’s reputation.
Managing the Risk team members (including Regional Risk Managers and In-house Lawyers) in line with the agreed values of the team including being supportive, being collaborative and ensuring high levels of communication, to achieve the team’s vision, to develop a continually closer relationship between the department and its internal clients in all regions and providing accurate, relevant and timely advice to the firm on a variety of legal and compliance topics to ensure the firm stays up-to-date with changes to legislation.
Being a member of the department’s Senior Leadership Team (which includes the COLP and Head of BAU), to devise and deliver the team’s annual strategic plan ensuring that the firm is able to continually improve its risk exposure, maintain its excellent reputation and act as a leader within the sector.
Leading and embedding a firmwide risk training programme, including a global communications plan, across each region and at every level of lawyer and business support professional, to ensure their business is fully aware of the risk trends and best practice guidance available to support sound, ethical decision- making and designing, implementing and improving policies, procedures and guidance as a result of lessons learned from across the professional services sector, including from its own experiences, to deliver a practical, robust and forward looking approach.
Reporting as required to the firm’s Audit & Risk Committee (a sub-committee of the Global Board) in order the firm has appropriate oversight and assurance and working proactively in partnership with its members and other senior stakeholders to identify priorities, mitigate commercial and legal risk whilst meeting key objectives; reporting also to the firm’s Executive Committee on new proposed policies and presenting as required at Regional Board level (alongside regional risk managers where necessary); and reporting to the firm’s regulator (alongside the General Counsel and COLP) as required.
Being responsible for maintaining the firm’s Risk Register and adequate assessment and monitoring of risks and their controls in line with the risk appetite and tolerance set at Board and Risk Committee level.
Introducing an appropriate risk management audit programme and working with practice groups to develop initiatives to improve the firm’s quality and consistency of advice, including considering lawyers’ working practices and how those can be developed to continually improve on the delivery of high quality services to clients.
Work closely with the firm’s COLP who leads on Professional Indemnity issues, to ensure that claims trends are identified and processes improved with the practice groups as a result of the issues identified. This will include regularly meeting with Risk Partners and practice group lead(s) to ensure they understand the trends and will act as a co-partner in any change projects which result.
Working closely with the Head of BAU to ensure that conflicts, client on-boarding and financial crime issues are appropriately and seamlessly managed.
Working closely with the Head of Operational Risk & Resilience and the firm’s IT Risk function to ensure that operational risks are appropriately integrated and aligned, in keeping with the risk appetite and tolerance of the firm.
Bachelor or Master’s Degree qualified (or equivalent) with a proven understanding and knowledge of commercial and corporate law
Significant and extensive experience in risk management and delivering in-house legal advice, with experience in business management also helpful
Excellent ability to manage stakeholders, driving action and challenging inaction
Expert trainer able to inspire and influence busy executives to engage with relevant training and scenarios
Strong partnership abilities; skilled in influencing and motivating others especially senior leaders and able to build connections and work collaboratively across boundaries at all levels
Strong project and team management, problem-solving and decision-making skills, able to work independently and think critically
Excellent verbal and written communication skills including presentation development and delivery and the ability to communicate complex legal issues and risks to a variety of stakeholders
A strong service focus with the need to listen and understand the essential requirements of different areas of the firm.
